As an avid, lifelong lover of all things in the world of Disney, this film was one that I had my eye on for quite some time and eagerly awaited its release. But, this excitement did not come without a little trepidation. When I learned of Tom Hanks (one of my all-time favorites) being cast as Walt Disney, I have to admit that I was left feeling a bit skeptical about that choice.
However, I made the mistake of underestimating just how brilliant Tom Hanks really is. He has brought the persona of Walt Disney to the screen unlike anything I could have ever imagined. That being said, this movie is not solely about Walt Disney. Instead it is about the creation of the beloved story of Mary Poppins and the struggles that author P.L. Travers had with wanting to let it go.
This film will tug at your heartstrings, will make you laugh, and will leave you with a warm sense of comfort after watching it. Emma Thompson gives the performance of her career and should, without question, be a heavily favored candidate for Best Actress in all the award shows in the coming months. The same should be said for Tom Hanks too.
Saving Mr. Banks is a film that families will enjoy and one that should be celebrated for the elegance that it brings in the story that it tells, one that will leave a lasting impression on us when we leave the theater. It left one on me, that’s for sure.
